Lemminkäinen's maps

I'm glad to announce everybody that I'm releasing some maps. These are all standard (non scenario) maps. Feel free to share, modify, improve or criticize them.

Eruption is a Urak sized map where all the faiths are spawning around a huge volcano, on top of which reside the forces of air.

Inland see is a slightly larger map, where all faiths are linked by land but Balkoth is secluded on a island. This map is ideal if you dislike getting rushed by Balkoth!

Vaalbara* (see note) is a huge land map with tons of special encounters and a private island for water.

Thetis* (see note) is a large map, where a single continent with bays, rivers and peninsulas is surrounded by a single ocean. It also features randomly spawning villages thanks to a map editing trick.

Oceania is a huge map divided into several large islands and some smaller islands with ressources.

Improved Urak is just a small tweak to the original Urak to add some new cool special encounters created by Boaster, a water/chaos village and less visually bugged terrains and roads.

*These two maps use randomly placed dungeons, but are so large that I use a special gs archive GS/PLACEDNG5 to make the game spawn more dungeons. Try to implement this setting if you play these maps, or the game will look very empty. You need to look in your gs files with WinMPQ and replace the part in GS/PLACEDNG5 where it says the first quote with the second quote I wrote. PM me for help if it is not working.

Been playing with this additional dungeons configuration and I must say It's pretty good, It makes the game artificially longer but also a bit harder in early as I've noticed it also increases the number of marauders roaming, I found myself going left and right at 50~ish turns to protect my resource making buildings from constantly being taken over as I couldn't get rid of the higher level dungeons yet.

Anyway, Thank you for this, really useful.

Oh, and awesome maps, I wish I had such mapping skills.

Regarding the quest - well, I was too young back then, and knew nothing about plot and design. I would do everything completely different nowadays, and doubt I will finish the once planned work.

thank you very much for all the maps you created!

Unfortunatly I'm not that good with Computers.

I downloaded "WinMPQ v1.64" from a WarCraft Website and opened Mantera's gs file.

Then I extracted the gs/PLACEDNG5 and opened it with Notepad.

I searched for the quoted lines and changed them with the new ones you mentioned.

After that, I saved the file and added it with WinMPQ. (/MPQ/Add)

I started the map Thetis to test the dungeon spawns, but the map is quite empty, I guess, I did it wrong. :/

Is it possible, to share your edited .gs file?

Maybe its possible to copy it into my game files.

Hi blakothbhaal and thanks for playing my maps! I'll try to send you the file tonight if have time on my computer.

But maybe I have one trick you could do to make it work before I can send the file to you. Whenever you use WinMPQ and modify a file, you receive a message saying "File gs/example has been changed since it was extracted. Update archive with this file?" Make sure to hit "Yes" and not ignore this window or close WinMPQ too fast before it sends you this message. I always mindlessly click "No" on any pop-up and close things quickly... Almost every time I try modding I have this problem. So maybe now you can use WinMPQ.

So glad to see new maps to try out! I hope to have multiple playthroughs with different maps on my LOMse YT channel but with all my kids my time is more limited than ever. Perhaps I can enlist them for assistance. Thanks to you and Mantera for all your continued lovingly created works for this beautifully imperfect game I so love!

Thank you so much for this! Do you have any maps based on original Urak which are more fair to all faiths with road between all and villages between all so same amount of turns for any to go anywhere including roads around villages/capitals/buildings so movement is not wasted to go around them?

Hi! You might like "ImprovedUrak" already listed, although it's not totally what you requested. I'll work on a "FairUrak" in upcoming days since you asked. Hope you'll enjoy it.

Is this map going in the direction you are hoping for? I can add other modifications on demand. However, if you want a super fair map it may be better to move away from Urak, since Urak is quite asymmetric by design with elevations and seas.

Thanks so much! I will give it a go for sure. If you want to make a new map for ultimate fairness please do. Maybe islands almost but with north/south/east/west canal/roads connecting them so we don't have to use ships(but still can if we wish). Thanks again!
