Simple enough. I got this game a few days ago via GOG.com(Looks like your legal wrangles worked-the version is 3.0.1.1 rather than 3.02). Since I seem to completely suck at it, I've been looking for advice, playthroughs, FAQS, and so on. You know what I found? NOTHING USEFUL. There's very little out there. If the Legendary Masters around here could compose a listing of tips, tricks and advice that works, it'd be seriously apprieciated, as I can see the fun, but I've no idea how to manage. I see people talking about soloing dugeons of 6-8 or higher when places of even level 3 tend to murder me more often than not, WITH an army. Not that making an army is easy as generally I have no money and Marauders tend to wreck everything and I can't really stop it.*sighs* Thank you for your time. P.S....And if you say 'Get this mod!' I will hurt you. That's not an answer, that's a plug.

Here's an amoral early game start tip:
Autocalculation of battles has added usage when you're a thief or mage start character.
As a mage, you may start with a small party using the default settings or you may run a custom game to start solo. If you're solo, you'd better make sure you pack enough mana to kill the entire encounter you're fighting because once you're out of spells the mage fighting melee is a complete joke.
However using autocalc can be a huge boon. Start a battle, choose as best as you can who to focus spells on, send a salvo of direct damage spells towards your enemies and kill what you can, then hit the autocalc button. Sometimes parties you would otherwise lose to using autocalc at the start of battle or trying to fight to the bitter end can be beaten when you autocalc in the middle of a battle. That's because autocalc takes certain factors into account when it determines who wins a battle and what units survive, and remaining mana is not one of them (in normal version, don't know if boaster changed it in his). Knowing which units to kill with your spells takes a little practice, try looking for units whose damage output and level are high compared to their life stocks (glass cannons, not meat shields).

"Get the mod!"
*Ahem*
Use the "Parry" command (via Hotkey in mod, or Defend Icon on self). Makes the unit stationary, but half his/her Attack value is added to Armor. 10 Attack means +5 Armor.
Have units that are being attacked go into defense mode with Parry.
Use Mages to target the stronger units in combat. If you can take out a Demon with Icebolt, or Light Rain, good. Use resistances to your advantage... except you won't know what the resistances of a unit are unless you check the site or... *Ahem*
Warrior Champions benefit from Ranged allies, either Troops or Thieves. Stand a Warrior up front, have him Parry and pick off from the back with Ranged Fighters. Aimed attack helps with stronger foes.
Use your Lord's level as an indicator of about how strong of encounters you can face by ±2 levels. It also varies by Leader Class, as follows: Warrior: ±2 Wizard: ±3 (depends greatly on your spell knowledge). Thief: ±1
In the... *ahem* you could use CTRL P to check your Party/Army Statistics.
FYI... ...GSZ if you want goodies without changes to spells, artifacts or units. ...GS5R3 if you want new artifacts, spells and rebalanced units.

If you have the GS5R2 mod, then I recommend the following: - Find a low-level mine or brewery and liberate it ASAP.
- You start with a unused follower in the mod. Use that follower in the capital until you have resources to train a champion and have a mine and brewery. That way, you can augment your strength and train new units faster once you have liberated the Great Temple. I recommend you hire a champion who isn't of the same type as your lord and one who trains units you are most likely to use and create. If you are Life, for example, get a thief if you are a mage or warrior since their archers are top-notch.
- Always use scouts but late in the game it may be better to use thieves, especially in areas that are hostile to you.
- Keep a solidly strong party in your stronghold and Great Temple. Keep a slightly smaller party in your training buildngs and villages. The target of hostile faiths and marauding parties is always those locations. For mines and breweries, use scouts to reclaim them.
- Marauders tend to not attack occupied buildings (at least until we figure out how to change their AI), so you should only be wary of opposing faiths.
- Computer AI tends to create a massive party of well-trained mercenaries and sends them to your stronghold. Be sure you can fend off two or three invasions from such parties at a time.
- Take a village that can create Water Barracks if you are not playing as Water. The Corsairs are great for getting across water quickly.
- Remember that your basic units have a paper-rock-scissors effect. Missile units defeat Infantry units who defeat Calvary units who defeat Missile units. Create strategies based on that basic rule.
- Have infantry defend your missile units individually by using the Ctrl+Mouse Click method.
- Have your Calvary units flank enemy missile units, if possible. In other words, send your riders up the sides of the combat room and attack from the side or behind. Remember, they are great for dealing with missile units.
That's all the advice I have for now.

Small tip: (Probably fixed in the mods, but good for non-modded games)
A marauding party will not take your stronghold unless it has destroyed one of your side buildings. If a party has taken up residence in one of you side buildings, and is too big to fight by your base defenders, just pop them out and right back into the stronghold. This reconqueres the stonghold and kicks marauders out of all side buildings.

save/load abuse is the single most effective weapon a human player has. use it.
back when i started playing the game, i thought autocalc would be too generous to me; today i rarely use it. keep practicing normal fighting, its fun!
