Hmm, that seems fairly odd to me. I've got two XP computers in my house and I know for sure one is Home edition. However, I have not encountered this problem for LOMSE.
Are you using the English/American version of the game? Or are you using a different language for LOMSE?
Also, did you try installing the 301 patch? I am not sure if that would help, but you could try that anyways.
What problems do you encounter? Is the game giving an error before even loading, or does it load and then quit? Is the screen flickering wildly? Does the install say something about "shell.dll?"
Is there anything that you can tell me about your computer that might help me to beter answer your question?

I had another thought... does someone other than you have Admin rights to you computer???
If someone does, ask the person who does have the Admin rights to install the game for you. I think this may be what you seek.

what happens is this..
I put the CD in and then the auto screen will pop up... the image of the cover screen won't be there but I'll still have the option to install or cancle
when I click install an error pops up that says Unable to run windows subsystem... Unable to run this program b/c of 16 bit something or other and then a window pops up with two options... cancle and ignor... both do nothing but close the window
so my problem is this... I cant even get the install sheild to run let alone the game...
now me being the person that I am said... ok I have a 98 system on the network so I installed the game there and then oved the installed files over... well the game ran! but I couldn't do anything past that b/c it said it requried the CD (I did install the full version) and when I put the normal CD in... (not a hack version) it simply won't pick it up
from my past computer experiances I can only figure out that it has something to do either with install shield, my CD ROM, or some other setting that I'm unaware of
so any help you guys can give on how you installed it would be GREATLY apperciated
ohh as far as the spec's go, I have an Alienware Area 51 Labtop
thanx again, -Lon

Are you the administrator on your computer?
I had the same problem on one of my computers with the picture not showing up in the autorun, however I had the admin rights to install the game on my 'D:' drive of that computer.
If you are not that administrator, log into an account that does have those administrative rights and try to install the game then. If you are still having problems, try to contact Sierra/Vivindi Support via email. Don't bother with the Technical support over the phone, they don't know shit about anything and they'll likely waste your time.

yea, I'm def. the admin for this computer (I was the one hat set up windows and has done everything for account creation)
just doesn't make sense this problem, for you guys you just poped the CD in and it ran fine, no hang up's?
stay safe and thanx, -Lon

Yeah, pretty much. I didn't have any problem on the XP computers, except for the Install saying there wasn't a shell.dll (but that didn't affect it any). That and the background picture in the autorun didn't show up.
I don't know what to tell ya man.

alright so I kept messing around with it and have come to this point...
If I go and simply run the game from off of the CD (using explor and then hitting the LOMSE application) I can get into the game... but from there on I get prompted with a "Please Insert the Lords of Magic CD" now I thought that it was simply the drive letter that was hanging me up so I went and changed the drive letter of my CD to E instead of D... didn't work
then I looked back at the error message that I was getting and thought... well hey why don't I just put the AUTOEXEC.NT file into the c:\Windows\System32 folder...
did that and then I get an error about not being able to enter into protected mode b/c of DOSX.EXE not being found in the AUTOEXEC.NT file... now I can't open up AUTOEXEC.NT b/c I have no idea what it's written in
I'm running out of things to do... any ideas?
stay safe and thanx, -Lon

Update your CD's drivers. Reinstall Windows with a Custom Installation (if there is one). Try changing your CD rom to drive R (just to try it).
I would suggest using Windows ME, personally. I cannot stand any of the XP systems.
Other than this, I've got no idea.

my friend had this same problem this morning, what he did to fix it was copy autoexec.nt from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32 and it worked fine for him good luck

Hey, colonelmustard. Thanks for helping him out where I could not. I am not great with all technical issues, but I'm glad you were able to help him. We have one more LOM player in the world, and that makes me happy, heheh.
I look forward to playing on Kali with you some.

I had a similar problem when I tried installing LoM:SE. I put the CD, no splash screen, but I could still see the buttons. However, when I clicked install, the install shield icon would pop-up, it would load, and then it wouldn't do anything once it got to 100% (I waited many [10+] minutes). I exited out of it, restarted, etc, etc, so then I finally just tried letting it run for however long it wanted, and I just browsed the internet, and for whatever reason, about 25-30 minutes later, it started installing.

You know, now that I think of it... there is another way to install the game. Just copy the files directly from the CD to a folder. It should work the same. Folders: map smk wav savegame custldr Files: DPstub.exe lomse.exe smackw32.dll storm.dll Language.inf Sierra.inf Battle.snp Standard.snp gs.mpq pic.mpq sndfx.mpq Then, it should work just fine, assuming we're talking about LOMSE that is
