I think that they should use the total war engine, large scale battles involving thousands of men if they ever make a sequel to this game. Imagine the epicness of watching a flight of dragons rain fire upon men while mages blast hundreds of others to death, necromancers raise entire armies etc.
they should also incorporate the dungeons and dragons rules into the game, this game is perfect for them since its based on days. Also adding in more dungeon crawling with boss's, treasure, etc. So the final game would really be a hybrid of the total war series and the Neverwinter Nights games. of course you'd have to add caveats that you cant have whole armies exploring dungeons and things like that.
If you followed the Neverwinter Nights model far enough you ould raise the lvl cap to 20 for champions, ten for normal folks, and the lord lvl cap could be around lvl 24. Allow full customization of the characters, spells, feats, all that, and thus open up the role playing aspect a whole lot more.
If they followed the total war lead they would need to add in dozens of more units for each faith, maybe bring the barracks, mage towers etc into the city, and allow for full scale warfare.
I think if they blended these two games together well enough that it would easily be the best game ever.

Nooooooo! Having the battles on such a huge scale would totaly take away the charisma and involment a player has with their troops. what sets LOM apart is how loosing just one infantry can set the scales of victory or defeat. Battles could still be epic but don't need to be over the top where they just become another "zoom out" till your units just become characterless blobs hovering about the battlefield, affair. Have you played EAs lord of the rings RTS? If epic battles with dragons and mages is what your after then EAs already done it. I see where your coming from but I don't think huge battles are in the spirit of LOM. I would like to see the maximum army size increased to 5 champions instead of the usual 3 though.
I was thinking the same aswel, Id like too see champion only dungeons aswel with multiple levels.

Hm... it might be possible to blend the two engines together so that the Total War engine (Rome and later, earlier engines wouldn't cut it) would be used for the campaign map, while Neverwinter nights would be used for the battle map. Of course, the whole endeavor would have a host of issues...
