Is the gs.mpq supposed to be filled with files similar to Unknown_00000001 in name?

It looks like only the original LOMSE gs.mpqs have this. gs5 has names for all its files.

The "unknown" files you see in the gs.mpq are files that were included with the game but were not used. However, in some of the other MPQ's, those unknowns could be in use but just were not listed in the file lists. But more than likely, they were just extras that were not used.
You should see that some of those *.gs files are actually spells that maybe the creators were planning to add but couldn't due to deadlines to release the game. Spells like "Hyper," "Elemental Protection," "Mass Purify Wounds" and some others are part of those list of unknowns.
You really don't have to worry much about them. You can always look at them yourself using notepad for the files in gs.mpq.
Since you're a modder, feel free to ask any other questions you might have.
Later.

Thats odd, your saying it should have some recognizable files? Mine is completeley full of files named "Unknown" with no extension names on them either. I can't seem to find a single file named something other then "Unknown."

Woops, I forgot to add that if I open one of the files it contains the proper data, but like I said the files are all named "unknown" for some reason.

Wierd, my mpq is missing its listfile... maybe my cd is bad. The game still runs though.

Regardless of what MPQ Editor you use, you will need to use the list files which can be found on my website, or any of the respective MPQ Editor websites (Shadowflare/Ladik).
Once you have the list file for LOMSE, configure your MPQ Editor to use the proper list file (Choose Directory, then select the file). From that point on, all unedited MPQ's should read with file names, with the exception of a few files.
