Sorry if this is a bit basic - can you create maps which place the cities in new locations?

A map-making guide may be a good thing to create. I remember there was a good one online, but that site is down. It went into some detail about making various types of land formations on LOMSE.

There's no wrong way... to make a map. You do what you like really. And if it makes some sense, that's good too!

Really the guide would be more about what to expect when you place certain things as well as some tips on terrain formation if people want to create things like canyons, valleys, lakes, waterfalls, etc.

First off, thanks Mantera for all your hard work. LOMSE has been one of my favorite games for more than a decade and you just keep making it better and better. My question though is about maps. I've played the Xtreme and Xpert maps but haven't found them to be that challenging. What is the most challenging map you've played and is it available for download?

Any of the 32x32 or 64x64 tile maps that do not have Dungeons on Hard Mode. Villages? Some do and some don't, but even the ones that do will be difficult if not impossible to kill the Marauders who guard those villages. But they're the most challenging by far. You have to start out my killing enemy scouts. 32x32 or 64x64 tile maps on Hard Mode, with a starting party. That's probably the toughest challenges I've endured.
