Salutations.
I am working on a map in the editor, and this is the first serious attempt I've made at doing so. I originally intended this as a pet project that I alone would see and revel in, but it's turning out so splendid that I won't be ashamed to share.
I'm not worrying too much about how IMBA the map is for certain faiths. So far I have tried to be fair in placement of leveling opportunities (grossly numerous at the moment), but it's my intent to be deviously unfair with resource node placements to encourage land-grab warfare.
The main reason this map differs from all others I've seen is that it is, essentially, a large island (technically two islands). There is no marching East to circle around to the West, unless you have a couple of ships and a few turns to burn. (In which case, go for it. The enemy might not be expecting that, hmm? Or they might sink your ships and score some easy kills.)
While I balked at making the map the maximum 1028x1028 size because of the scroll-lag that it caused me, I did make it an impressive 800x800 (Urak.scn is 128x128). The landmass on which the faiths reside is split into two 'continents', each roughly the size of the original Urak map.
I am posting here because I'm interested to hear... anything, really, about this idea. It may or may not be plausible for multiplayer (it could be fun, I hope), but at the very least I think it might make for an amusing afternoon of solo-play.
And to that end, if anyone would like to receive this map when I've finished (I started three days ago, and after... oh... 8-10 hours of work, it's about 1/5 finished), I have no idea how to accomplish that if it doesn't fit in an e-mail. Please enlighten me.
… and oh, my, no. I have suddenly had the very chilling realization that I've been working with an outdated version of the GS5 (thank you Mantera!). That's not going to be an issue with sharing this map, is it?

Would love to see a map such as this.
A really large map, enough to fit 2 Uraks? You have your work cut out for you.
Depends on which GS5 mod update you have. GS5R3 is the latest version of the GS5 series of mods. GS5, Revised, 3rd generation.
GS5R3 I believe has the latest goodies available, for instance the +/- Elevation keys. Also the scrolling through the dungeon list scrolls up to 9 at a time, which definitely makes finding that right encounter quick and easy.

Oh, well, don't have that. Blast and curses. I have taken to typing out the encounters instead of wearing out my clicking finger, though -- it's not exactly a challenging code to remember.
what do you mean by elevation keys? when I hear that, I think of the original function for raising and lowering elevation via mouse clicking. Did you add hot-keys for that, or is it something else?
But, ah, the fact that I've the older version (apparently the GS5B, according to the graphics instruction text document) isn't going to affect whether the map can be viewed by later versions? It shouldn't, I'm assuming, since all of the original maps are viewable, and they quite obviously predate the latest mod... so, I suppose never mind that.
Hmm. This will be the first time I've tried doing so. I'll look into it.
*edit* Oh. My name isn't capitalized. This will vex me forever. I'm going to terminate this account and recreate it for that damn capital letter (while I have only 3 posts to sacrifice).

You can edit your name appearance in your profile.
Starting a map with the GS5B will carry into the GS5R3.

I see... *sigh* I had been looking at the thoroughly unalterable username. Apparently, scrolling down is not one of my strong points.
And that megaupload link looks like the easiest thing to use since the invention of the on/off switch. I'll give it a whirl on a test file soon.

"Finished" with 4 of the 8 faiths. While a grind, this isn't nearly as challenging as it had seemed six or eight years ago.
I'm wondering if those of us who multi-play this game have a general opinion on whether the addition of a great many high level encounters/dungeons/towers would break the game-play in some way (with the extra items/spell/scrolls that would drop). What do you think?

In multi-player, my suggestion is to provide a nominal amount of encounters that allow a player to progress with his or her Lord or Lady, but not enough to the point where they will turtle.
With how the GS5R3 mod works, and with the way encounters are setup, there are quite a few games where I have to go into another faith's territory to continue gaining experience safely before tackling the highest dungeons in my own region.

Hmm. After months of inactivity, I've spent several more hours on this map... and once again, it's so broken that it's not even funny ^_^ I don't aspire to more than providing a new exploring experience for those of us who meander the game solo on occasion -- although I implore you to not hit F4 right away.
The only faith region that hasn't been mostly finished is chaos... and the village placements, which are going to be screwy to say the least.
I hope to finish this as soon as... Monday? Feb 20, 2012.
(Map has reached a *whopping* 2.18mb … =_=)

*cough* Now I just feel left behind.
I was worried up until last night that I would lose my map if I upgraded to the newer versions of your modified GS5 -- and then I spent all of about two minutes browsing the game folders to discover that the map file itself was very much preservable. Silly me.
I'll shoot for two more hours tonight.
And before I forget, when in the map editor I've experienced some quirky features such as:
1) any and all sprites placed on the map scrolling at a different speed than the terrain at scroll speeds exceeding 10 (not consistently, though, sometimes I can get away with default scroll speed 15) ---- The sprites reset to their appropriate positions if/when I adjust the zoom of the map in any way, even if clicking to zoom in while already fully zoomed in.
2) disappearing sprites... they still exist on the map in the editor, and appear as normal in game play, but occasionally phase out of sight when in the editor. Sometimes this is triggered by placing new sprites (dungeons/encounters of any type, not plain tree/rock sprites) *anywhere* else on the map, sometimes the sprites just go down invisible and I have to launch the map to see if they're in the appropriate location and aesthetically pleasing enough. This only started occurring *very recently*, though, so it might just be an effect of having a large number of sprites to begin with.
Erm... (1) isn't a problem at all, and I can't imagine (2) would be an easy fix if it were a stress located within the game itself. My only desire here is to know if you have encountered this before, or if ought to consider the possibility that my computer is just wonky.

(2) is a known issue with no fix, save for removing the additional Building Sprites.
So perhaps for map editing you should stick with the previous update.

Ah, no no. At the time of my post, I was working with the older update. Today I downloaded the latest and greatest, and it's just as good except for where it's better. The "I can scroll 9x faster!" really is much more convenient, regardless that I could type the names before. I realized today that I'd been totally neglecting the "keep" encounters. boo.
¡qué ridículo! I have discovered that scroll speed 30 doesn't have any trouble moving the sprites at the same speed as the terrain, but 29 all the way down to 9ish regularly spurns cooperation. Was 30 the original scroll speed? What it wasn't adjustable?

Wow! So, how long has the restriction on the number of Villages been lifted? Because I just swooned when i saw that i could put down at least 24 of them without any cancellations.

Actual villages remain limited to the original amount. Check the lords of magic readme file.
I think original scroll speeds were 20 or 30.

Oh, damn it. I checked by creating a plethora of villages on a random new map, loading a game on the map and counting to see how many were there. I would have sworn that I counted twenty four, but now I've just done the same thing again and poof. sixteen.
Back to the map again... it was ready! it was... ready T_T
hmm. setbacks. I tried *playing* on my map for the first time. WTB more low level hamlets.
bed time, though.

hmmk, we'll try this again. I do apologize to Air and Earth … your zones are kind of boring. www.mediafire.com/?8kbsemhc0jw97nh*edit* Hum. At this point in time, I would like to initiate a warning that this map is buggy because of its size. It would be prudent to save often. *edit* so as of 7:35 east coast, I hotfixed death's "my boats spawn in a pond" problem. … if anyone finds any obvious errors, don't hesitate to post. *edit* Although I've just discovered I didn't have to, since I discovered how to finagle a boat across dry land. Exciting.

A rather nice-looking map. Admittedly it's a good deal larger than I generally prefer (or maybe than my stone-age comp can handle!), but I'll definitely give it a spin. A couple suggestions for improvement, take them as you will: Firstly, as you mentioned, the air and earth zones could use some sprucing up. Secondly, I prefer not to have too many similar encounters (and buildings clumped) in one area, as is sometimes the case with this map, although I realize that to do otherwise than you have would require extensive work (and it's obvious you have given quite a bit already). So overall, good job , and I would love to see more user-created maps of a similar caliber, in order to enrich this classic game.
