While in the early game the "Hard" mode is more difficult than "Medium" due to your party's vulnerability. However, it is not likely that you will be attacked at this stage, so risk is still very manageable.
Here's the thing about late-game "Hard", though. Because the Great Temple Guards of each nation are so tough it is unlikely that a single AI will attack the Great Temple of another faith, and even if they do, their casualties may be great enough to make the endeavor counter-productive. In that case, the game remains a free-for-all, in which the human player holds the advantage, because they can decimate each opposing nation in turn.
This isn't the case in "Medium", where the Temple Guard is light, so there is the possibility of one faith fighting and winning a few critical battles, and taking the Great Temples of several regions, giving them a massive logistical advantage over the player, and thus making the game more difficult than "Hard".
I am basing this hypothesis on the last few games I played. What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Great Temple level difference:
On Hard, the Great Temple is the level you place it as in the map editor, but is no less than Level 6.
No possibility of liberating other faiths. All are active.
Marauder champions in towers and keeps are all buffed up with extra primary stats.
Enemy Lords on Hard are all Max level, with max level entourage, and [Mister] garrisons ("MR HAT!").
Also in cave encounters, you'll get 3 pesky scouts and you'll see more enemy units. Experience gain from combat is HALF the enemy party's barter value, whereas on Medium it is 66% (?). So you have tougher encounters, with fewer experience to gain from combat.

Hard is really hard for me I HAVE to use Autosaves/saves in general EVERY single time or else some Faith that doesn't like me just kills me like that. Mages in general will have the most difficult time, like the Lich or Sorceress Queen. Thieves are next, then Warriors will have it easier than the rest. What I LOVE about Hard is that no one can swear fealty to another. And it kinda keeps the game going which I also love unless you're not playing as Death because Death always goes on the offensive. Also on Hard mode, your character gets that neat Red Flag above her/him xD

Yeah, when playing on Hard, enemy Thief Lords have little issue mowing down mages. My Lich fell in around 3-4 shots from the Earth Thief Lord with ATK/RNG at aroun 24/20, too quickly for me to react to. There's just no place on the map that's even temporarily safe when your opponents have range like that, with fast reload to boot.
