So, I've been considering starting a new map to play on. The goal of such a map would be to keep the game fast-paced but at the same time providing more opportunity in terms of exploration and dungeon conquest. I estimate that I may start on this project in around a week, but that estimate may change as there is another project I would like to start shortly. It is also not yet clear if this project will even go ahead. Positive feedback will probably motivate me to get to it sooner.
Features:
Map Size: 150-200% of Urak
Capital Distance: 120-140% of Urak.
The discrepancy in capital distance and map size is to provide a lot of area for players to explore, while remaining in close enough proximity to the other faiths to effectively wage war in a timely fashion (which would keep multiplayer playable).
Inaccessible Map Areas:
Type 1 (Walls): Some areas of the map will be walled off with cliffs and impassable terrain, with only a single small gap where a mid-level dungeon will be placed. Inside the area there may be one or two high-level dungeons and one or two mid-level mines.
Type 2 (Movement): Some map areas will only be reachable by water-going or by flying units. Like in one of the LoU quests, there will be several islands with extreme high-level dungeons. There will also be a few areas similar to Type 1, but which would be completely walled off so that only flying units may be able to explore those areas, assuming flying units can bypass terrain obstacles.
Towers: I would like to make champions less prohibitive in the early game and to encourage slightly larger armies. To that end 2-3 Towers will be placed near each capital, assuming prisoners can be freed from Towers of levels 4-6.
River systems: There will be extensive river systems with the goal of which will be to make Ship-building and warfare more attractive. There will be island areas which will only be accessible by boat (islands in lakes). The river systems will all drain into the main ocean. Doing this will make the Water terraform spell more highly valued, as these river systems could be easily blocked by all faiths except Water.
Mines and Breweries: will be placed in more sensible areas. Breweries will be near forests and mines will be near mountainous areas. There will be a larger number of Mines and Breweries at larger distances from the capitals.
I'll post additional ideas as I think of more.
