So I recently purchased this game through Good Ole Games (gog.com). I somewhat regret this, as it seems to be patched to the unstable 3.1 build. Anyway, gog.com has its own installer which installs it under C:/Program Files (x86)/ Gog.com/ Lords of Magic Special Edition and when I try to extract the GS5R3 files, it tells me that it couldn't extract some of the files and gives me an error message. Has anyone tried to install this mod using the GOG.com version? Is the install just different in some fundamental way? Should I find an original install disk (really would like to avoid that) Thanks.

As for me, my official disk (localisation) from 1999 is so old that it is crumbled into dust, so I just downloaded LOMSE from torrents. And the patch 3.01 with no-cd, also. No such problems appeared then, I renamed manually GS5R3.mpq to GS.moq and PIC5R3.mpq to PIC.mpq, and then replaced original files with the ones I mentioned. All files you mentioned are the files from mod archive, which I have dowlnloaded and unpacked into OTHER folder using WinRar, not that folder of LOMSE. Then I just replaced gs.mpq, pic.mpq and copied all the new maps into the map directory.
This is how I've installed the mod. Hope it will help somehow.

Yeah I ended up just torrenting it. I figure the actual devs who made this game in '98 or whatever it was wouldn't get a cent if I bought the game anyway, and I've owned ~3 hard copies besides. Got it working.

Sure, and many games of that time like Fallout 1-2 by now-dead Interplay have the same option.
