Any change I make via mpq editing works just fine but with one major problem. Any time i make any changes at all the portraits disappear! If i edit for example skeletons and make them do 12 damage instead of 10 all portraits for all units and champions are no longer visible in the game. How would I go about fixing this? When i reinstall the gs mod it fixes it but gets rid of my edits.

ladik's mpq editor the most recent from his site. So should I reinstall the game from the cd and patch back up etc? I'll try it and let you know if it works, thanks for quick response.

Ladik's editor has got some issues to consider. Thus, game script (.gs) files must be compiled with ruleset like Diablo 1's (Options - Implode+Encrypt(0x00010100); Compression - <IMPLODE>). Lots of problems appear with different rulesets, including "gs.mpq file is corrupt" message, which was discussed in earlier threads on this forum. Packing files to mpq with Ladik also increases the size of file, for example when I repack textdict.gs the size of archive increases to 395 kb which is the original size of textdict.gs instead of 1 Kb which is added by me to the original file. Don't know the reason.
I don't know if that might be the key to your problem, but maybe someone will find this information useful, or make a decision to choose WinMPQ.

Ladik MPQ Viewer should only be used to create whole new archives.
WinMPQ should be used for active editing.

True. Actually I still use Ladik because I'm lazy at the moment to download Visual Basic 4, and I just re-download gs.mpq from Xorgate every time to make a repack, to avoid size problems. But I'm looking forward to use WinMPQ instead in future.
