The fool being myself.
So, I followed these instructions to use GS5R3, and they were simple instructions:
Some of these things I couldn't follow to the letter, however. Namely, I have "Impression Games," not "Sierra" as the folder name, but that shouldn't have been a problem (I have the original disc version of the game). I didn't have to unpack or extract anything (or maybe I was supposed to, but I didn't have to use any extraction tool to move them about), and I simply copied the renamed files over the old files to save time. The mod should have applied, but as far as I can tell, it hasn't. I can't see the version number in the main menu, and the interface I read was improved didn't seem improved.
What should I do? Should I start with a reinstall to repair any damage I may have caused? If it helps, my computer runs Windows 8 64 bit, but it runs LOMSE just fine. This mod simply hasn't agreed with my files thus far.

Install the game, apply the mod, step by step, and do each step deliberately with full concentration. Seems silly to say "with full concentration" but it may lead to finding more details regarding your installation problems.

What LOMSE version do you have? It might have been cracked by cool-hackers, which can lead to serious change in file structure for GS.MPQ (for example, the mod cannot be applied to my ancient pirate Russian version from 2002, though it still requires CD in drive, it was just a localisation with translation). Just a thought.
I just had to download English version from torrents, and everything went perfect.

Well, I followed the directions again, this time more to the letter. I still don't see a version number anywhere, nor any difference in my gameplay. I never had to use a program to unzip anything, though...
I honestly don't know. The original disc for the game stopped working LONG ago (as in, the disc from when the game was still new), but several years ago I found the game sitting on a shelf at Wal-Mart. I've been using that disc since, and I've never had a reason to wonder what version I had until now.

Well, you may just go to The Pirate Bay and get another LOMSE version, as you have already spent money for it (I don't know honestly if LOMSE creators got even a single cent for it) and nothing can stop you.

Or he can avoid the hassle by buying a genuine full retail version of the game, in digital form, from the website.

Yeah, this option is more noble. Just don't buy the game from GOG.com - this is worse than torrenting it for free. :S
