This map came about while I was playing through different maps and gamestyles in Age of Empires II this week. While one of the major draws of LOM is the psuedo-globe style map, something that has kept me playing other RTS games like AOE has been the frantic atmosphere of island style maps. With that in mind, I present Shelter Isle. A smaller sized map with balanced resources in each region makes for faster gameplay on test runs, which would lend itself well to multiplayer matches. In addition, somewhere in the vast ocean surrounding the island is a "Treasure Cove" - which again, in multiplayer matches could be a decisive foothold. The other key point I wanted to hit on this map was trying to encourage the use of a navy. I rarely if ever see the computer AI using ships, as on most maps there isn't any real reason to - here, however, the movement bonus of ships could allow for quick strikes in enemy territory without a prolonged campaign through unknown territory.
