(using Mantera's mod)
Does LoM have alliances? I was able to plea for crystals from Life successfully. I want to know how if possible, to secure military alliances in LoM. I did liberate the Air temple. What would happen if I hadn't liberated the Air temple? I was hoping I could get some support from other factions.
Also, what does the target symbol above these shadow units I see? Some shadowy units have no target.
Do factions ever rebel? It said earlier that the Earth temple was liberated by Death and Earth swore fealty. However some time after that it said Death conquered or seized the Earth temple. (Don't recall the exact words.)

LOM has some default starting political relations, which can set the tone for the game. As far as "Alliances" it depends on which ones you forge.
Barter tones are mostly effected by what the other party's attitude towards you stands at. Such that, you cannot trade with someone who is Hatred or Hostile, because they're not interested in you.
Target symbol above the unit means it's time to go shopping at Target... nah, it means the thief has been detected in stealth.
The announcement for control over Great Temples will come each time it changes hand by a player. So, it means Death had to have lost it to Marauders at one point.
As far as temple liberation, as long as the temple is not already liberated (with a colored faith flag on it), you can potentially get another faith to swear fealty, where their Lord becomes your heir. Additionally, depending on how high or low the relations are, you can also receive other stuff, such as more of their treasury, spell knowledge and armies on the open map. Lowest attitude to get fealty sworn to you is Neutral. Devotion yields the highest turnover of property.

Thank you for explaining. I don't understand how they turn over different amounts of property based on relations though. If you have total control of their faction I would assume you'd get all income. Is this just an initial payment, and not related to income?

The better the relationship, the better the portion. I don't know what else to say above and beyond this.
