Now twenty years into the future from where the Imperials Clan began officially on Heat.net, start date of November 7, 1998.
The Imperials Clan was started as an idea in the late 90s. I was introduced to Warcraft 2 by a neighbor friend in 1996. This was in the days of Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, though I had not been familiar with computers in those days; it was mainly the Nintendo Entertainment Systems and Super Nintendo. It was actually this same friend who had helped me setup my first email account through hotmail. The neighbor, whom I will refer to as PJK was playing on multiplayer service Kali in 96-97. PJK and his brother Nick had a home computer, where I did not have access to one until later. I was super interested in Warcraft 2, and between the three of us we played many, many hours of the game even multiplayer between a serial connection of two computers they had. These were the days where parents would get mad and force the kids to "go play outside," even though we wanted to play games inside. PJK and Nick had those parents.
In 1997, I had badly wanted to start playing online and start my own Warcraft 2 Clan. I didn't care much in winning or losing, but I definitely would've preferred winning; I just wanted to play. Playing online would have to be delayed. I had access to a computer to play, but not a desktop and not a dialup connection. The only opportunities I had to play in 1997 was when I got both Warcraft 2 and the expansion for my birthday. Still didn't have a desktop computer, but was able to use my dad's laptop from work with a second HDD to swap out.
This is the laptop I got to work with. A 133Mhz Dell Latitude XPi on a 2 GB hard drive, with 16, 24 or 32 MB of memory (I do not recall).
With this, I had many evenings to play Warcraft 2 from home.
So in 1997, PJK, Nick and myself got together outside of my house and we were talking about making a clan together. I had the idea for the main component of the Clan: the name and the presentation. PJK said it would be best to create what he called "Houses" (which may have been derived from the clan called "Roman Legion" that he had been apart of under the name "Justinian Piso"), and Nick came up with the name Serran for one of the houses. And between the three of us we were Maxim, Natrimo and Serran. There was no house of Palidore until later.
The idea was formed, but nothing ever came of it as I still had no way of playing online. By this time, Diablo had taken over for our interests. I had later got Diablo (for Christmas or Birthday, I don't recall), but still no way to play online.
Early in 1998, I had shared many modem games with Nick in Warcraft II. I had also shared with him and PJK Lords of Magic, a game which my brother had bought and would keep away from me, for fear of scratching the CD. This was also the time period in which CD duplication had opened up.
The year of 1998 was a mix of Diablo, Warcraft 2 and Lords of Magic, though it was mostly Warcraft 2 at any chance I could play over a modem.
So while the idea for the Clan was formed, nothing materialized, and it just remained an idea until 1998 where a few friendships took off in middle school. This is when I had met alias Theo Draconis (previously Joel Draconis) and alias Dezeroth (later Astragoth). There were many modem games played between the three of us, though only a pair at a time.
Later in the year, my family finally got it's own dial up connection and Dezeroth (later to become Astragoth) discovered the online gaming service known as Heat.net (a service by Sega).
Seeing the opportunity to start a Clan, it was done. Maxim, aka Boaster (nickname on Heat), starts the Imperials on the first launch onto the Heat.net platform. Later on, Theo and Astragoth would later invest themselves as co-founders of the Imperials on Heat.net.
As far as friendships with them with, for all its subjective worth, Theo was a better friend to me than was Astragoth.
Twenty years ago. Good memories of simpler times.
