The game could really benefit from a cooldown system on the spells, you could actually start to balance mages power then rather than it being a scramble to shoot off your OP spells as quick as possible (Though I won't deny this is a really fun but OP tactic!).
For infantry and Cavalry, yes you're right there needs to be some specific function that the units fill, Warcraft 3 and Total war have different damage/armor types which encourage armies made up of different compositions (rock, paper, scissors gameplay).
The whole armor system is LOM is completely broken, it doesn't take a much to get your armor so high level 5 infantry can't do anything against it and battles could literally last forever.
I wouldn't want warriors and thieves casting mage spells, but every champion should have a skill tree with new abilities and bonuses they can unlock at later levels.
I would love a way to melt down old artifacts that you don't want, similar to how you can in WoW. This would grant the player an additional resource like "Arcane Alloy", which could be used to create custom weapons and artifacts.
Also, one of my pet hates is how the artifacts you get from dungeons doesn't seem to have any correlation to which faiths territory you're in. Like, why am I getting death or Chaos artifacts in Life's region which I can't use. It’s frustrating, and I almost never find my favorite bow, the Bow of Bakal, in any normal play through.
I could list many hates about the AI, the AI is just terrible at everything in general. Though my biggest frustration when fighting Balkoth is that he's such a little wimp, he runs away all the time, end game is me trying to chase him down on the map then firing spells at him before he leaves the battle map. And of course, he recovers all hitpoints at the end of each battle.This is the big daddy of LOM, the evil villain, he should be programmed to fight every battle and actually put up a fight.
