Could there be villages of people without a faith? I don't mean atheists here, just a functional "side" in the conflict with its own AI: nonaligned towns/cities. That way, villages neutrally held wouldn't just sit there, waiting for someone to come and conquer them.

Neutral-Friendly Merchants and Mercenaries, and seperate from that are the Neutral-Hostile Marauders.

I wasn't thinking so much of merchants as mini-capitals (like towns in LOMSE) which have their own AI and can have diplomatic relations like the faiths, yet have no Great Temple or any objective other than to survive for as long as possible. They could trade with faiths, but would also be candidates for alliances and the like.

That sounds like a good idea. It'd be good to have the chance to trade with a group that wouldn't try to rip you off (without you first having to 'butter them up'…) I'd like to see something like this if a LOM2 ever came out.

They have a feature like this in another strategy game. In addition to the other players, you have to worry about Pirates. You can pay them off to attack other players, but the other players can outbid you and have them attack you - and you won't know who sent them.
I like the idea of having non-faith factions rather than those mindless marauders (or in addition to them). Trade with them, fight them, or set them against your enemies.

huh, i never thought about this. I really like this idea. it sounds like it'd be a cool new feature. I think the map'd have to be a bit larger to make it not seem too over crowded, but still i think it would be a great addition
